Story
Its name honors the Harlequin frog, an exotic species endangered by extinction. This conservation project covers 74,746 hectares of tropical moist forest in the Chocó biogeographic area. The project, ARLEQUIN REDD+, is led by the Community Councils ACISANP, COCOILLO, and COCOMACER, in partnership with BIOFIX. They aim to minimize the impact their communities have on deforestation and forest degradation.
The project includes initiatives such as reforestation of degraded ecosystems, strengthening of the agricultural sector with local products like annatto seed, cassava, Chinese potato, cacao, medicinal plants, banana, and sacha inchi, and modernization of rice processing. Other efforts include promoting environmental education and tourism, implementing appropriate cooking technologies, and improving infrastructure and equipment in mobility, health, housing, and recreation.
